Thank you to all of the presenters and attendees on the January Collaborative calls.
We were happy to have representation from 15 adult centers and 35 pediatric centers in attendance. Meeting minutes, slides, and recordings from both calls can be found using this link.
Adult presentation topics included lowering average HbA1cs via multidisciplinary care teams, education, advanced diabetes technology access, and utilizing a T1D Registry; improving depression screening rates, prescreening rates, and entering them into Epic; as well as using Patient Navigators, Pharmacy Liaisons, and multi-lingual information flyers to improve CGM usage.
The Pediatric Collaborative call was a moving experience and a fitting final call for Dr. Ebekozien, who appreciated the outpouring of support. Presentation topics included the Diabetes Resources Education and Management Support (DREAMS) Program aimed at limiting DKA events for at risk adolescents, a fascinating real-world use of SmartForm patient data in Epic and how that can be used to relieve administrative burden while improving outcomes, and finally, the T1D Screening Project, which utilizes telemedicine, another SmartForm, and referring siblings for screening. Other ideas included empowering youths to leverage technology, and interventions via a psychologist and predictive analytics.
The insights exchanged and the spirit of collaboration during these calls were truly inspiring, and the knowledge, experiences, and best practices offered will have a positive effect on clinic practices. We are eagerly anticipating your participation in the upcoming Combined Collaborative Call April 15th from 3:30-5pm EST.
Revisiting the QI Portal User Feature
The T1DX-QI Portal has been adding features and enhancements over the years to assist you in your QI work. As a result, we thought it would be a fitting time to revisit the T1DX-QI Portal User Feature. If you'd like to be spotlighted in your very own interview, please reach out to QI@t1dexchange.org and we can share the questions with you. And, as always, signing up for the portal is fast, easy, and can be done by following this link.
Name: Jared Friedman, MD
Site: Northwestern Medicine
Years with the T1DX-QI: 3
What is your favorite feature in the QI Portal and why?
My favorite feature in the QI Portal is the Comparison Reports. I find it useful to review how our clinic is doing relative to our peers and look for certain areas where we have room to grow.
Practically speaking, which feature (in addition to the above) do you use most often and why?
Our team has started using the QI project log under the Improve tab (something we are trying to get better at using more often!). The platform is very useful for tracking and sharing our project PDSA cycles.
How does the QI Portal support your improvement efforts?
It helps us to keep things organized much better than we would on our own by centralizing our project documentation.
It also helps us understand the gaps in achieving optimal care delivery (to guide future projects) and allows us to see what other sites are doing to improve the lives of individuals with T1D.
What do you dream the QI Portal could do that it doesn’t do currently?
A fun addition would be a yearly “highlight reel” that curates the data and highlights the areas where each site has made the most growth and improvement compared to prior years. It would be another great way to share our successes and impact with our colleagues and local stakeholders.

The University of Pittsburgh is conducting a qualitative study with a national sample of pediatric diabetes centers/practices about their current processes for working with schools. This study is intended to complement the survey data that your center may have shared through the T1DX annual survey. The information learned through this research will be used to help develop strategies to implement interventions for diabetes in the school setting.
Interval interviews are anticipated to last between 30-60 minutes.
This study is being conducted by Dr. Christine March (PI), who can be reached at 412-692-9156 or Christine.eklund@chp.edu, if you have any questions.
