QI Portal User Feature
Name: Whitney Beaton
Site: University of Wisconsin- UW Health Kids
Years with the T1DX-QI: 1.5
1. What is your favorite feature in the Portal and why?
I really like the reports tab. The ability to easily view our data and to drill down by patient characteristics is helpful for monitoring our QI initiatives and understanding where we have future opportunities to improve. We don’t have access to tools within our own health system that allow us to access ambulatory diabetes data this easily, so the portal has been an amazing benefit gained through the T1D Exchange.
2. Practically speaking, which feature (in addition to the above) do you use most often and why?
I also use the Dashboard to quickly view our metrics before diving deeper in reports. It’s helpful to see an overview of where we’re at with our metrics before diving deeper. Within the Reports tab I often use the option to stratify by race/ethnicity and insurance status. These really help when speaking to equity in our group.
3. How does the Portal support your improvement efforts?
We don’t have access to tools within our own health system that allow us to access ambulatory diabetes data this easily, so the portal has been an amazing benefit gained through the T1D Exchange. Being able to see the graphs easily has already been helpful and we hope to continue to increase our use of this information within our organization.
4. What do you dream the portal could do that it doesn’t do currently?
I would LOVE for the QI portal to easily track our QI work and have options for overlaying initiatives or PDSA cycles with the data graphs/reports.
Q&A Corner
There have been several newly asked questions on the internal member website. Please use this link to respond and see all questions.
1. We are wondering what other clinics have procedures in place with the new announcement of Teplizumab.
Name: Grace Nelson, MD Clinic: Le Bonheur Children's Hospital Adult or Pediatric Population: Both Date: 11/18/2022
2. We are wondering about what other sites do about ketone strips and if we believe it’s a national problem we want to do something about it!
Right now most insurances do not cover ketone strips for our patients (urine or blood). Sometimes we can get one at diagnosis from the local pharmacy but after that it is not covered. Patients are forced to order on Amazon or buy at pharmacy out of pocket.
Given that the ADA recommends blood ketones to be checked that would be ideal, but if not, patients should be able to get urine strips as checking for ketones is a life or death thing, that is required to care for their diabetes.
So questions are – what do other sites do and if they are running into the same issue we need to push for advocacy to get these covered for our patients

Here are a few resources shared from the HelmsleyCharitable Trust as mentioned at the Learning Session.
Description: This paper explores the current CGM coverage landscape in Medicaid, highlights state approaches to CGM coverage, and identifies state opportunities to expand coverage. It also provides recommendations to the diabetes community on how to support increased CGM access and coverage across the country.
Description: A lack of widespread patient access to providers who offer CGM services impedes CGM use. To explore how to utilize community pharmacists to expand patient access to CGM, the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation convened a virtual roundtable on November 2, 2021. The goals of the roundtable were to: 1) Establish guiding principles for the integration of CGM into community pharmacy practice. 2) Provide insights and perspectives on the CGM landscape as it relates to pharmacists. 3) Discuss expanding patient access, education, and management as well as pharmacists’ scope of practice and payment models.
Description: This white paper contains findings from track 6 of the Digital Quality Summit and calls for improved protocols to boost the quality of diabetes care across the country. The recommended upgrades were collectively authored by a cohort of diabetes, primary care and digital measurement experts who gathered in July 2021 last year’s fifth annualDigital Quality Summit hosted by NCQA and HL7. The experts identified several areas for improvement in type 1 and type 2 diabetes care.
