      Farewell and Thank you!

We would like to share our deepest gratitude to Dr. Alexis McKee and Julie Samuels as they move on to pursue new opportunities.

We are sad to see Dr. McKee go but excited about her new adventure. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Dr. McKee and she was truly a valuable asset to the T1D Exchange QI Collaborative. Her team jumped right into the "Smart Pen" special project upon joining the collaborative and she has worn several hats since then. Apart from being a subject matter expert in clinical care, she is passionate about improving access to diabetes technology for underserved populations. She is a pleasure to work with, and she always shared lots of great ideas to improve patient care. She has such a great attitude to work and we will miss the energy she brings to the group. We sincerely wish her well in her new adventure!

Julie Samuels has been the QI Coordinator for the Mount Sinai pediatric team since they began with the T1DX-QI in 2021. Julie gracefully transitioned to the role with top organizational skills, dedication to patients, and an eagerness to learn all things QI. She has supported her team in improving depression screening rates, and became one of our coveted QI Portal Champions! This is Julie's last month with the T1DX-QI as she starts her next chapter in medical school later this year. Thank you for everything, Julie! You will be missed.

Dr. Ebekozien was honored to be the guest speaker at the Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children's Hospital Annual Quality Day. He also delivered a grand round lecture to the Department of Endocrinology during his visit to Houston. He was accompanied by Trevon Wright from the T1D Exchange Office.

      QI Portal User Feature

      1. What is your favorite feature in the Portal and why?

My favorite feature of the portal is that it reflects the essence of the Type 1 Diabetes Exchange. The portal represents collaboration and communication between clinical sites as well as a commitment to promoting compassionate, high quality, evidence-based care and real-world data related to people living with type 1 diabetes. My favorite feature in the portal, to date, is the library. I am excited that our site is close to being data mapped. Once that occurs, I look forward to being able to review our clinic’s metric outcomes including changes over time, in addition to being able to compare our outcomes to other centers with similar populations.

      2. Practically speaking, which feature (in addition to the above) do you use most often and why?

To date, while waiting for our data to be mapped, I primarily use the library feature. Our program has used the library to access a number of change packets which have led to us successfully launching multiple QI initiatives. A colleague at our site and I also recently referenced articles from the library to share up-to-date data obtained by the T1DX for a presentation we did for the California Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. To echo what a previous portal user said, I also appreciate not having to reinvent the wheel and start from scratch with our QI work. Having access to other clinics’ experiences helps us move our QI work along faster than we otherwise could. I am so grateful that the T1DX focuses on some of the most relevant topics of our time in the diabetes community including health equity, technology and mental health.

      3. How does the Portal support your improvement efforts?

Our clinic has used various resources in the library for a variety of our QI projects. We have received great insights about other clinics’ workflows, patient surveys, and realistic goal setting considerations to name a few. It is also very validating and reassuring to know that other centers are addressing the very same things we are!

      4. What do you dream the portal could do that it doesn’t do currently?

Until we are data mapped and can use the portal more robustly to track our data, I think it would be great to have a section in the library dedicated to patient voice and what patients feel would be the most helpful to support their diabetes management.

      New Questions:

      Question:
Does anyone have insight into pediatric sites that have institutional resources for food insecurity, housing assistance, and a formal committee or task force to address racial & health equity in the T1D population? Are there some ways that adult sites could improve in this area in particular? Would like to hear about resources at pediatric and adult clinics.
